Organizing Tips

Be realistic with your "to-do" list. Write the most important items on paper, and check them off when you've completed them! Tackle the items one by one. When you complete these important ones, then you can add more. Here are some more simple suggestions:

  • If you don't use it, donate it. If you haven't used an item for over a year, donate it to your favorite charity or recycle it.
  • Build a wardrobe of classic items that you enjoy wearing. Then, when you buy a new item, donate one of your dated pieces.
  • Store like items together - Glass with glass, pottery with pottery, & one set of collections together, not mixed with other collections.
  • Contain & conquer clutter. Use dividers with smaller items so they don't mix with other items. This includes silverware & other kitchen utensils.
  • Everything has its place; always return items to their homes. Barbara's rule: "Only touch an item once."
  • Baskets & decorative boxes are a great way to store items you do not want to see.
  • Label boxes & bins for quick & easy retrieval.
  • Everything should serve a purpose or have a use; if it's just gathering dust or you don't enjoy seeing it in your home anymore, give it a new home - Donate it!
  • Subscriptions
Be realistic about your reading. If you find that publications pile up without you getting the time to read them, unsubscribe.
  • Quality over quantity
Remember the adage, "less is more"; less stuff to maintain means you have more time to live and play.
  • Reusable shopping bags
With reusable bags, you don't end up with plastic or paper bags overflowing from your drawers and cupboards. You're also doing the environment a favor.

Remember that it took you years to accumulate the clutter; now dealing with it, alone, may be overwhelming. We'll make the job easy, because A Space For Everything is "in the neatness business".
